Here’s a question, how does one find an escape from one’s daily routine? Trips to the cinema? Spending an afternoon in a bookshop? A get together with friends for fine dining or a cocktail night?
As good as these might sound, I was looking for something a little grander, as it was nearly my birthday at that time, I wanted to treat my hard working self to something sweet; something a little.., or perhaps a lot more special.
With escape and indulge in mind, yet only two free days from work in hand. I narrowed my pampering plan down to a local hotel stay. Craving a room with a bay view and a spa bath for my own treat led me to Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection, which conveniently was not far from where my partner and I live.
The Historic Rocks & Walsh Bay Precincts
Being the departure point for shipping Australian wool to the world, the Walsh Bay Wharves are of historical significance and are now the home of Pier One Sydney Harbour, which is actually located on the heritage listed Pier One fingerwharf, a Walsh Bay landmark.
It’s also nestled under the Sydney Harbour Bridge; a stone’s throw from the world heritage listed icon the Sydney Opera House and only a few steps to The Rocks, birthplace of modern Australia. I know that may sound too much to be restful, but it is quietly tucked away on the harbour and provides a sense of escape. Escape was exactly what I had in mind!
Our Walsh Bay Suite
We were greeted with champagne on arrival and chocolate strawberries. The staff who checked us in and handled our luggage were friendly.
What really impressed Kent and I was how spacious our Walsh Bay Suite was! Living in a small apartment in the city, a 62-square-metre-suite with a waterfront view was truly a luxury.
What I also loved, was the large, built-in day bed right next to the window.
Our living area and the bed room was separated by a sliding door. And our bed? It’s perfect! It’s just right for me, which was not too soft and not too hard. This is very important for us all, as it’s difficult enough to sleep in a bed which is not our own. A great quality bed is what makes the difference.
Our bathroom, the his and hers vanity units always impress me. I had indulged in the spa bath for a long long time…
Overall, I enjoyed Bates Smart‘s design for the refurbishment, it celebrated the raw structure and architectural materials of the former shipping fingerwharf.
Room For Improvement
I have to mention this, I had given Pier One as my feedback how lovely a complimentary breakfast would have been, we did book a suite after all.
And now, low and behold; not only does Pier One Sydney Harbour offer a complimentary breakfast for two; you will also receive one bottle of sparkling wine and complimentary mini bar – for suite room booking only! There you go, always leave them honest feed-back!
Now if we had been offered a complimentary breakfast for two, it would have been a complete ‘suite experience’.
Want to try Pier One for your self?
For those who are not familiar with Sydney, the nearest train station to Pier One Sydney Harbour is Circular Quay, which is two stations away from Sydney Town Hall and on the train line of City Circle. It is also where you alight if you were after the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour and the Rocks district.
