There were several ideas in my mind about how I would like to spend my birthday. An escape from my daily routine was what I desired most. So I ruled out a dinner gathering or a cocktail party and focused on the idea of an escape. Yes, a getaway perhaps, to relax and revive.
With an indulgence escape in mind, yet only two free days from work in hand. I narrowed my pampering plan down to a local hotel mini-stay. Craving a room with a water view and a bath (it is a must for me!) led me to Pier One Sydney Harbour, Autograph Collection.
The Historic Rocks & Walsh Bay Precincts
Being the departure point for shipping Australian wool to the world, the Walsh Bay Wharves Precinct is of historical significance and is now the home of Pier One Sydney Harbour. Yes, the hotel is located right on the heritage-listed Pier One Fingerwharf, a Walsh Bay landmark.
This 5-star hotel is also nestled under the Sydney Harbour Bridge; a stone’s throw from the world-famous icon the Sydney Opera House, and only a few steps away from The Rocks, the birthplace of modern Australia. I know that may sound too much to be restful, but it is quietly tucked away on the harbour and provides a sense of escape.
Our Walsh Bay Suite
Kent and I were greeted with champagne and chocolate strawberries on arrival. The staff who checked us in and handled our luggage were friendly. But what really impressed us was how spacious our Walsh Bay Suite was! Living in a compact apartment in the city, a 62-square-metre suite with a waterfront view to us was indeed a luxury.
Our living area and the bedroom were separated by a sliding door. The king bed was very comfortable! I also enjoyed the large, built-in day bed right next to the heritage windows which provided an uninterrupted view of Walsh Bay. This sizeable section could easily accommodate a third guest.
The his-and-hers vanity units in our grand ensuite bathroom were funky and lovely. A deep spa bath put a big smile on my face. And just as I planned, I applied a face mask and indulged in the bath… Followed by an intimate dinner in a nearby Thai restaurant for a birthday treat.
Room For Improvement
We like Bates Smart‘s design for the refurbishment, it celebrates the raw structure and architectural materials of the former shipping finger wharf. We were offered to give the hotel our feedback before we checked out. Since I had an itch to tell them how wonderful a complimentary breakfast would have been… we did book a suite after all! So here’s what I wrote: ‘…now if we had been offered a complimentary breakfast for two, it would have been a complete suite experience for us…’
And now, lo and behold; not only does Pier One Sydney Harbour offer a complimentary breakfast for two, but guests will also receive one bottle of sparkling wine and a complimentary minibar – for suite room booking only! However, the room tariff has been raised too with this package.
Want To Try Pier One For Yourself?
For those unfamiliar with Sydney, the nearest train station to Pier One Sydney Harbour is Circular Quay. It is only two stations away from Sydney Town Hall, and on the train line of City Circle. It is also where you alight if you were after the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour and The Rocks district. And of course, there are always Uber and plenty of taxis.
