We learned our Lessons from ignoring customers’ online reviews (CLICK HERE for the full story). To avoid falling into tourist traps again when it comes to choosing a restaurant, Kent found this venue with a great reputation in Monterosso al Mare. This post is about our dining experience at Trattoria Da Oscar.

Located In The Old Town Of Monterosso

Monterosso is divided into two parts – the ‘new town’ and the ‘old town’ – linked by a single tunnel. The old town of Monterosso is dominated by the ruins of the Fieschi Castle and is characterized by narrow medieval alleys, walls of the ancient fortress, and iconic colourful houses.

It was our 6th day in Monterosso al Mare. Naturally, Kent and I had walked several times from the new town where we were based, through the tunnel into the old part of this seaside village. But that day we came here specifically for dinner, it gave us a chance to see the old town in twilight and enjoy its vibrant night scene.

Away From The Waterfront Restaurants

We found Oscar on a side street located away from the restaurants with ocean views. It was busy. We were glad we booked. The interior was modern and funky. A ceiling covered by stones and a mural of the old town Monterosso (with the Aurora Tower in it) were the main features of the dining room. Plenty of seats out front on the patio for those who like dining al fresco.

Prosecco? Yes, Please!

After a whole day of walking, taking pictures, and sightseeing, a chilled prosecco was a treat we needed. We stuck with local produce. Bursting with fruity flavour and frothy bubbles… our choice did not disappoint.

Homestyle Italian Seafood Menu

Mixed Fried Fish, Spaghetti with Clams, Ligurian Swordfish, Grilled Calamari, Marinated Mussels… The seafood-focused menu written on the blackboard was what we expected from a seaside village in Cinque Terre. These non-fancy names also hinted at unpretentious homestyle cooking.

Deep Fried Anchovies

Lemon Anchovies, Salted Anchovies, Anchovies in Carpione’s Style, Tris of Anchovies, Anchovies with White Wine Sauce, and Deep Fried Anchovies. Well, we were spoiled by the choices of Anchovie dishes that night! ‘What to choose?’ Since Kent and I both fancied the delightful combination of crunch and tenderness from the deep-fried anchovies, our decision was made easy!

Our Deep Fried Anchovies arrived on a rectangular plate with paper underneath. We squeezed lemon on the fish and could not wait to dig in. When I took a bite, the crispiness from the coating, followed by the soft, slightly oily texture of the fish inside was rather satisfying. The fish itself had a fresh, clean taste without any overpowering fishy notes, enhanced by a hint of saltiness. A squeeze of lemon added a citrus contrast that elevated our mouthfeel.

When you look at this plate of food, it looks so simple, but it’s the ‘simple food done well’ that makes all the difference!

Gnocchi With Scampi And Tomato Sauce

For our shared main dish, Kent and I chose Dish of the Day – Gnocchi with Scampi and Tomato Sauce. I love scampi! We were very lucky that night as the waitress told us this would be the last serving of the day’s special. We heard our waitress apologised to the next table for running out of scampi, therefore, no more Dish of the Day!

The serving was generous. Gnocchi with scampi and tomato sauce had a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. The gnocchi was slightly chewy, with a lightness that allowed it to absorb the sauce beautifully. The scampi were succulent and juicy, cooked just right so they were tender without being dry and rubbery. The tomato sauce was rich in flavour and vibrant in colour. The acidity and sweetness were well balanced.

This course was another example of simple food done well! Kent and I both agreed that it was one of the best gnocchi dishes we’ve had.

A Traveller’s Note

On the bottom of the menu board, it wrote: SORRY, WE DON’T ACCEPT CREDIT CARD. Now this is when diners need to do some research and come prepared. Yes, Trattoria Da Oscar only accepts cash payments. We spent €75 for two shared courses and a bottle of Prosecco which was quite reasonable in Monterosso. We enjoyed conversations with a young couple from the United States and exchanged our Cinque Terre experiences. What took them to Trattoria Da Oscar? Through good online reviews of course!
