The view, that Outback view! As soon as Kent and I checked in to our Superior Room at Sails in the Desert, we were immediately enchanted by this ‘perfect Australian Outback scenery’ that started from our balcony… The red sand dunes and desert bushes were under the cover of the deep blue sky. We knew straight away – ‘This is it!’ – we have a unique location right in our backyard!
On our second morning in Yulara, we set out to shoot our first fashion story. My selection: minimal style – a smooth cream blouse and sharp pleated metallic silver skirt as a contrast to the strong colours and wild textures of the Outback landscape. We set off walking counterclockwise along the red dirt service road that skirts the perimeter of the resort’s buildings. First Kent found a rise of rust coloured hillside with just enough, but not too many spiky branches for me to apply some free-spirited Isadora Duncan dance moves.
‘Great! Fabulous! More dramatic please…’ And so on until we had exhausted our repertoire in that space.
Next, we discovered a little area that provides another kind of contrast all together – industrial equipment. That quite frankly, if not for the unique Outback light and the red dusting of the pavers, it could have been almost anywhere! Kent loved the geometry and form of industrial machinery; therefore, it was only natural for him to include this twist in our shoot.
‘The whole place is like a spaceship that’s landed in the desert!’ He said excitingly.
For decades I have adored the beauty and the splendour of Europe and have often travelled to France, Italy, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Czech Republic to fulfil my fantasy for their elegant palaces and piazzas. I have never been one for the national parks and landscape of the natural world. But there really is something about the Red Centre of Australia which I find very exotic. For me, it’s the distinguishing colours where the attraction lies. The remoteness and the secluded character of the desert make this place mysteriously alluring.
I’m sharing this fashion story just as Australia enters the ‘living with COVID’ phase of the pandemic we are all going through. Are you still thinking of international travel? For us Aussies, it’s worth keeping in mind exploring our own backyard. Make no mistake it is not the Palace of Versailles… but it is equally special, the natural cathedral of the Outback, and it is grand and gorgeous in its own right!
